The 50 Cities with the Best Singles Scenes in America. Having trouble finding a date?

It wouldn't hurt to work on your opening line. Or upgrade your wardrobe. Or get a better haircut. But it may also be that you're just in the wrong locale: When it comes to finding a date and a great place to take them, not all cities are created equal. Some don't have many single folk to begin with; others don't have a lot of fun bars or restaurants to entertain you and your date (if you find one). To help figure out the cities with the best singles scenes, we pulled data from the U.S. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, WalletHub, and more, determining which metropolitan areas have the most dating spots per capita, the highest percentage of singles, and more. Together, these numbers show where the best singles scenes are and thus which cities are the best for dating—some are what you'd expect, but a few will probably surprise you. And for the cities you'll want to steer clear of while on the hunt for that special someone, these are The 50 Cities with the Worst Dating Scenes in America. New York, with its nine million-plus population, is one of the loneliest places a single woman can be. Many young souls, like myself, move to New York in search of excitement and adventure, enchanted by the promise of a diverse culture and a never-sleeping cosmopolitan life. Reality has a hard history of not matching expectations, and New York is not an exception. With ever-rising rent and a cost of living at comically high levels, most people find themselves spending their first year (or first ten) in New York fretting about how to survive, not enjoying the life of glamour, dating, and culture they imagined. Like many singles before me, I moved to the city with wide-eyed optimism about my new chic life, and thought New York to be rich with romantic possibilities. Sadly, I was way off. New York does have a lot of people, but I have yet to be convinced that more than 1 percent of those people are actually dateable. The first problem for me is that I am a woman who is interested in men, and New York is about 53 percent women. Of the already tilted scale, 9-12 percent of Manhattan men are gay, according to The Williams Institute at University of California at Los Angeles. Then there are the men who are married, in a committed relationship, or uninterested in dating monogamously. So straight, single women have a good amount of competition for New York City’s eligible bachelor population. While I moved to the city with the grand idea of finding a perfect boyfriend who enjoyed riding the MTA and ordering takeout at 3 a.m. as much as I did, many men my age seemed to move to the city with the idea of dating a professional model, or many professional models, preferring bottle service at secret night clubs at 3 a.m. over Chicken Lo Mein. In my twenties, I mostly dated people who worked in the restaurant industry, as I did. Restaurants are a real treasure trove of maladjusted people, in case you’ve never had the pleasure of participating in the industry. The somewhat chaotic, unpredictable, and often lucrative life of a restaurant employee tends to attract emotionally vacant, narcissistic alcoholics—just my type. New York is a big restaurant town, so there are always a good number of men who fall into this category. Alright, Here Are Some Terror Stories. I dated one particularly charismatic wine professional who mysteriously never wanted to hang out at his place in Brooklyn. He explained that his roommates were always around, so it was better to hang at my place. After about a month, I learned his “roommates” were actually a live-in girlfriend. I was relieved when online dating became mainstream. Eager to branch out from dating self-loathing sommeliers, I thought apps like Tinder, Bumble, Match, and OKCupid would change the tide of my miserable dating life. Some people have had great luck with these apps, and to them I say “cheers.” They deserve all the happiness in the world. That isn’t how it worked out for me. I chatted with and met about five people through the apps, and every single date was a disaster. The very first was a guy whose age was published as 32, and when I met him in real life, he was actually closer to 55. He explained that he just didn’t get women his age, so he flubbed his age online so he could get to know someone before revealing that he was older, and had a daughter in high school. I left when he got up to use the bathroom. Also through an online dating app, I met a man who turned out to be a passionate environmentalist. We met at a restaurant for lunch, where we enjoyed champagne with lobster rolls. When he began to reveal his deeply left-wing political values, I decided that I would not just cut and run, but stick it out, and maybe find some common ground. More champagne was ordered, and as I revealed my far more conservative beliefs, we began to challenge each other further and further. After lunch was over, we walked through Union Square, where a Greenpeace volunteer was signing people up for donations. I’m still not sure what happened next was out of spite, confusion, or just sheer drunkenness, but I donated money to Greenpeace, with a commitment to donate more money on a monthly basis. I canceled my debit card the next day to avoid actually being charged, but went out with the guy a few more times. It finally ended when he insisted I go to Planned Parenthood fundraiser with him so I could meet some “real feminists.” After a few more disappointing Internet meet-ups, and many unsolicited texts and pictures from people online, I decided I was done dating through apps. A friend offered to set me up with a guy friend of hers, whom she described as “really sweet, really stable.” I was excited to meet him. I respected my friend, and she knew my sense of humor and my values, so I hoped the guy was on the same page. Truthfully, he might have been, but I’ll never know, because our date only lasted 19 minutes. We sat down at a bar, introduced ourselves, and he proceeded to tell me that he’s had a lot of bad luck with women, and really wanted to settle down immediately, get married, and have kids. He must have sensed my uneasiness, but attempted to sweeten the deal by letting me know that his parents lived really close by, so they would be there to help with the kids. At this point, I still didn’t know his last name, and we hadn’t gotten our drinks yet. Part of me thought, “Maybe he’s just coming on strong, but he’s really great—stick around,” but the other part of me, the louder part, was eyeing all the exits. I made the lamest excuse I could muster, and got the heck out of there. During my time in New York, I’ve met and dated a few actually somewhat normal human men. I’ve even loved a couple of them. Perhaps it’s the inherent wildness of the city. We all grow up with an idea that New York is the pinnacle of freedom in America. You can go there and do anything, and be anybody you want. My ‘Sex and the City’ experiment: A year of dating in NYC’s cutthroat meet market. Most Popular Today. More On: online dating. Burning heart: Online date ended in murder, arson, massive wildfire, and now two more deaths. Woman allegedly raped, man stabbed in neck during Tinder date gone wrong. Men and women don't agree on pandemic sex, study reveals. Why your swipes on Hinge and OKCupid might be racist. A 28-year-old law student with two roommates in Washington Heights. A 46-year-old private equity exec and dad of two, from Cos Cob, Conn. A 44-year-old college dean, who traveled all the way from Philadelphia for Sunday brunch. It all started in the middle of the night last February, shortly after a 4½-year relationship crumbled. Lying in bed and squinting through tears, I downloaded Hinge and started scrolling. I had two goals when I dove back into dating. The first: to have fun, and lots of it. My breakup had been painful, and I wasn’t ready to be vulnerable again. See, I’m stubborn and determined. A Type A personality with a work ethic that won’t quit. So I took on the dating scene like I tackled homework in high school, or researched restaurants for my last vacation: obsessively. After all, dating is a numbers game. More dates meant better odds. So I filled my calendar. By the end of the year, I’d met with 25 men, gone on dozens of second and third dates, and chatted up contenders until my phone burned hot in my hands. Here’s what I learned from 12 months of chasing romance in NYC. The app scene is chaos. Embrace it. Before my year o’ dating, I always figured I’d end up with someone like me: a hard-working New Yorker, an extrovert, a connector. But on Hinge, I decided to open up the applicant pool to those with different résumés. Everyone always talks about how hard it is to meet people in New York. So I set wide parameters for age and geography, and spent a lot of time combing through profiles in the app’s Discover section. When it came to reaching out or responding to suitors — on the app, you “heart” someone to express interest — I erred on the side of yes. I definitely wasn’t wanting for options: I found myself matching with everyone from barely legal 19-year-olds (no, we didn’t meet up!) to silver-fox dads. Some people just wanted sex; others wanted something more serious. Creeps were easy to spot — and dismiss — before IRL encounters. Evenings took me everywhere from the Upper East Side bar Dorrian’s, a brotastic haunt of the young and overeager, to the batting cages at Chelsea Piers. I locked lips all over the city — once, side by side on adjacent docked Citi Bikes before we both pedaled to our respective homes. Yes, I had a lot of weird nights. But I also had some pleasant surprises. My first post-breakup date was with an openly Republican lawyer from New Jersey renting a Financial District pied-à-terre. When he learned my favorite food was chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven, he bought raw dough to have on hand when I came over. On the flip side, some dates who seemed the most similar to me on paper — a journalist, say, or an NYC native — belonged in the friend zone, not the bedroom. If you care, get personal. Some people swear by stock pickup lines. Or that old standby: “Hi.” But when I was really interested in someone’s profile, I sent a specific message about one of their photos or interests. To a cute athlete: “Hello! I’m a runner too, and your CHEESY Swiss joke made me chuckle out loud.” To a pop-punk fan: “Blink-182 has SUCH good karaoke songs.” That strategy held true true offline, too. When I met a guy who shared my love of architecture, I brought him to the Grand Central Oyster Bar — a favorite, in part, because of the arched ceilings lined with Guastavino tiles. I knew he would appreciate it as much as I do. When men shared my philosophy, I noticed. Small gestures moved me, from flowers on my birthday to personalized playlists to someone buying The Post expressly to read my work. You’re not too busy to date. Like most New Yorkers, I’m overscheduled. But I wanted to go on as many dates as possible, without sacrificing work or family or friends. That required a lot of organizing and planning — which, luckily, is something I excel at. To avoid wasting excess mental energy on trivial stuff, I systemized my dating look. I found a go-to first-date outfit: well-fitting jeans, cute flats and a sleeveless paisley blouse that showed just the right amount of cleavage (or a white eyelet shirt, if I was tan). I kept a makeup bag at my work desk, so I’d always be ready to roll. Instead of clearing my calendar for dates, I wove men into my plans. I brought guys to post-softball-game drinks and a friend’s ugly-sweater party. To avoid losing hours commuting, I scheduled the bulk of my dates near my Upper East Side neighborhood. When that wasn’t possible, I made sure the meet-up was at a bar or restaurant I wanted to try anyway — a soup dumpling spot in Flushing, for example. I got good at this. I even managed to make time for romance when I flew to Las Vegas for a conference: One fortunate dude met me for a romantic weekend of hiking, eating and putting a hotel room to good use. Games are for insecure 20-year-olds. There were too many guys, and not enough time. So I didn’t follow “The Rules” — waiting a few days to text after a good date, not sleeping with someone until the third date. That stuff is stupid, and it doesn’t work. Some women don’t like to eat in front of guys. Screw that. Years in a relationship had reduced my weeknight tolerance, and if I’d been ashamed to order food, I would have paid with a hangover. Finally, I decided to be honest — even if it risked turning people off. I told men that I was still hurting from my breakup, that I was afraid to be tied down. Anyone who I had a real shot with would need to understand that, and being myself made the dating process feel like less of a burden. Playing the field is fun and exciting — but you can’t do it forever. There was my flirtatious “I had a great time last night!” text. sent to someone I hadn’t met yet. The times I accidentally ghosted some lovely guys. The jolt of anxiety I felt X-ing away a potential suitor. Remember that Grand Central Oyster Bar date? It turned into a second, third and fourth rendezvous — all in one week. I was having a blast, but hesitated to commit. A year after I downloaded Hinge, Oyster Bar guy (aka first date No. 24) and I will spend Valentine’s Day together. He’s English, actually likes romantic comedies and is an exceptional cook. We’re planning to take a photography class together, and we’ve booked a trip to the Caribbean. It turned into a second, third and fourth rendezvous — all in one week. I was having a blast, but hesitated to commit.
